While there is a growing awareness of the need for accessibility in physical spaces, it is still rarely spoken about in online spaces. Disabled people access the internet every day, and they are actually the third largest economic power in the world, after the US and China! If your website is not accessible, they will spend that money elsewhere.
On top of opening up your website to that customer base, there are many other reasons to incorporate these things into your website.
- There are legal requirements in both Canada and the US. We will go over what these are and how to make sure you are compliant.
- It will benefit non-disabled people. Some of the things we will go over will also make your website more user friendly to many different demographics.
- It will increase your SEO – Search Engine Optimization!
- It will raise awareness that accessibility isn’t just about physical spaces. The internet should be available to everyone, and we should all do our part to make sure content we are creating is too.
We are going to cover Vocabulary, Tools Used by disabled folks to access the internet, Web Design, and Social Media.
Web designers are rarely taught about accessibility in school, even though it is a vital part of web development and SEO. Although we will cover some backend web design info, you don’t need any technical or coding skills to take this workshop. If you are building your own website, it will give you a great start. And if someone is building your website for you, it will give you a list of items to bring to them.
You will leave this workshop with a list of resources and ready to add accessibility to all your online platforms.
We will be donating 10% of funds raised from these events to CAN – Creating Accessible Neighbourhoods, an organization created for people with disabilities by disabled people.
